NDIS Review Panel Final Report Released

On Friday 3 November, the NDIS Review Panel presented its final report to Commonwealth, State and Territory Disability Ministers at the Disability Reform Ministers Council. This report will now be considered by National Cabinet and we eagerly await its release, which we anticipate will happen in December.

This is a landmark review and the NDIS Review Panel has engaged extensively with people with disability and their families and with representatives from the disability and mental health sectors. We have had the opportunity to speak to NDIS Review Panel members on several occasions to provide our advice about psychosocial disability and the provision of supports for people both inside and outside of the NDIS.

We engaged with our MIFA Member organisations to understand how the NDIS can be improved and where it is working well for participants with psychosocial disability, their families and for service providers. There is still much work to be done to improve the experience of participants with psychosocial disability and we are hopeful that the final report will provide recommendations about how the NDIS can embed a recovery-oriented approach for participants with psychosocial disability.

We also continue to advocate for investment in psychosocial supports outside of the NDIS to ensure that people living with mental health conditions who have complex needs, but are not eligible for supports under the NDIS, can get the support they need in their local communities. We have provided a solution through the implementation of a National Psychosocial Support Program that sits alongside the NDIS and there is potential for this program to be delivered as part of a ‘foundational support’ approach.

We look forward to continuing to raise awareness of the importance of investing in psychosocial supports and analysing the approach of the NDIS Review Panel to psychosocial disability in the coming months.
