National Meeting of Health Ministers & Mental Health Ministers

As the Health and Mental Health Ministers’ meeting approaches on August 16th, MIFA has taken a firm stand on behalf of its members by addressing critical issues with Health Minister The Hon Mark Butler MP and Mental Health Minister Hon. Emma McBride.

MIFA has highlighted the urgent need to close the gap in psychosocial support for those with severe and complex mental health conditions who fall outside the NDIS. MIFA has strongly advocated for the immediate release of the National Report into Unmet Needs for this group and urged the Government to spearhead a coordinated national response based on its findings.

MIFA has specifically requested:

  • A dedicated funding commitment to establish a truly national psychosocial support program.
  • Clear delineation of roles, responsibilities, and funding arrangements with the States and Territories to ensure this essential support system is implemented with urgency, transparency, and accountability.

It’s been 30 years since the closure of psychiatric institutions in Australia, with the promise that people with severe and complex mental health conditions would be supported to live well and safely within their communities. Yet today, 50% of these Australians are still without the support they desperately need.

It’s time for action.
