Joint Submission to the Joint Standing Committee on the NDIS Inquiry into NDIA Capability and Culture
MIFA, Mental Health Australia and Community Mental Health Australia provided a joint submission to the Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on the NDIS Inquiry into the capability and culture of the NDIA. We were pleased to work with our sector colleagues to provide consistent messaging to the Joint Standing Committee about the operational processes and procedures that underpin the capability and culture within the NDIA and how these can be improved to support better experiences and outcomes for people with psychosocial disability.
Our submission raised the following key issues to be addressed:
- the lack of psychosocial disability-specific skills, knowledge and experience amongst NDIA and partner staff
- the lack of assertive outreach
- inconsistent assessment outcomes
- planning that does not support recovery
- poor pricing methodologies that do not support recovery-focussed service delivery
- the need to expand psychosocial support services outside of the NDIS to meet the level of need.
The submission acknowledged the significant progress that has been made in recent years to support people receiving psychosocial disability supports in the NDIS, with further work needing to be done. We noted the importance of the development of the NDIS Psychosocial Disability Recovery-Oriented Framework and called for its expedited implementation, with consultation from the sector and people with lived experience.
