Reviewing the PHN Model for Better Mental Health Support

MIFA’s latest PHN Business Model Review highlights critical inefficiencies in how mental health services are commissioned across Australia’s 31 Primary Health Networks (PHNs). The review reveals funding inconsistencies, administrative burdens, service gaps, and a lack of transparency, all of which impact people with high-need mental health challenges.

Key concerns include hard borders limiting access, short-term contracts creating workforce instability, and data/reporting inconsistencies. MIFA is calling for nationally consistent funding, longer contracts, transparent commissioning, and a co-designed, integrated psychosocial support system to ensure better outcomes for those who need it most.
