Bondi Junction Inquest: Scaling What We Know Works

The NSW State Coroner’s recommendations following the Bondi Junction Inquest call for expanded short- and long-term supported accommodation for people experiencing mental health challenges and homelessness.

Across Australia, nearly 500,000 people with moderate to high mental health needs currently have no access to the community supports that help them live well in the community.

MIFA member organisations are already delivering the kinds of integrated, person-centred supports the Coroner has highlighted:

  • Karakan (QLD) provides supported housing with wrap-around psychosocial and clinical supports.
  • MIFWA delivers sustained community support that helps people maintain housing, wellbeing and stability.

Evidence shows these models reduce emergency department presentations, hospital admissions and cyclical homelessness, while improving participation and quality of life.

Scaling these proven services is a practical and effective response to the Inquest’s recommendations — and a critical step toward ensuring people can live safely, with dignity, in their communities.
