Rex Manderson

Rex graduated as an electrical engineer in 1979. From 1983 he worked as an engineering and operations manager for multinational companies in technology development, and manufacturing of power transformers and switchgear exported internationally. Since 2001, he has run his own manufacturing business which continues on a small scale, a biochar development climate change abatement project, and does some problem-solving consultancy for solar farms and alternative energy projects.

In 1979, Rex joined his wife and a committed group of volunteers in Karakan, facilitating alternative supported share-house accommodation for people leaving institutional mental health care, as well as a supported employment facility. He has been a director of Karakan continuously for 47 years, and with many other dedicated directors and staff, the organization continues to grow and innovate in response to community needs.
